Feel free to change or substitute ingredients!

Hi. I have a very fussy little chap who’s nearly 3 years old. I’ve made some food for him myself before, but have had to mix it with commercial meatballs, for example, to ensure he gets the right nutrition. He won’t touch dry food at all :-/ I’ve now had a look at some recipes and ingredients and know that, amongst other things, he won’t touch blueberries 😅 Can I leave out the berries, or swap them for something else? I was also wondering about the eggshell powder; it says it contains 100% powdered eggshell. Can I make this myself, then? I’ve been saving and washing eggshells for a while now. How do the rest of you with fussy dogs handle this?

• Hi Linda! 😊 Fussy dogs can certainly make homemade food a bit more creative 😅 As for blueberries, it’s not the case that blueberries themselves are strictly necessary for the recipe to work. We include berries and various plant-based ingredients partly for variety and to provide different plant compounds and antioxidants. So if he consistently picks out the blueberries, they can easily be swapped for something he actually likes 😊 And yes, you can make your own eggshell powder 🥚 Eggshells are primarily included as a source of calcium, so as you’ve already collected eggshells, you don’t need to buy ready-made powder 😊 Another tip for fussy dogs is to find something he really likes, and use this to make the rest of the food more tempting 🐶 This could be sardines, bone broth or another…
• Hi! Thank you so much for your reply! I’ve made some pumpkin purée and frozen it in ice lolly moulds today, and I’ve cooked a bone broth from pork ribs. I’ve noticed he walks away from his bowl if the food’s cold, so I always have to warm it up a bit 😅 He probably won’t touch sardines either… I bought some raw chicken drumsticks the other day, but I actually have to HOLD the end of the drumstick if I want him to bother eating it; if I let go, he lets go too 🙄 He LOVES chicken... What’s the deal with raw chicken, actually? They’re fine with raw chicken drumsticks or thighs… but what about raw chicken fillet? 🤔 How finely ground does the eggshell need to be for me to use the measurements in the recipes correctly? Linda
